You Left Me
Sitting upright in a highly-decorated bed, head lent back onto the rest, the mans eyes averted downwards, smiling faintly at the feminine head rested on his chest. She seemed a good whole foot shorter than him - from his grand height of 6'3"; slim, fine face and pointed ears to symbolize her elven nature; hair tied back into a neat, white ponytail - the complete opposite from his rough, black foxtail.
With one hand behind his head, the other patted hers, running gently through her hair as she purred faintly in her sleep. Letting out a gentle sigh and allowing a final small smile - more to himself now - to spread his mouth, he too closed his eyes, drifting off slowly, subconsciously enjoying the sensation after years of denying night-time rest.
--------------------------------------------------
The faint smacking down of boots onto a solid marble floor could be heard as he walked speedily through the winding corridors of the seemingly-forgotten, ancient, underground ruins.
He wore an extremely light, black metal-plated set of armour - keeping the heavy defense whilst allowing the same rheumatism and weight as leather -, a total amount of twenty Kunai strapped to his thighs; five large Shuriken strapped to his right wrist and fifteen smaller-shaped stars strapped to his left; two serrated daggers sheathed to either side of his hips, each one accompanied with a flintlock - both of which bore a red talon symbol onto the black metal; and two throwing daggers strapped to his pauldrons, one on each. Finalizing his flashy armour design was a black, red-bordered, cape which clung to the back of both of his paudrons, a black tabard slung over his shoulders and fitted in place by his shoulderguards, bearing a red talon symbol on the front and back - a finishing touch of a black metal-plated mask covering up to his nose and tied at the back of his neck with cloth.
Turning a corner he stopped dead, head immediately shooting upwards to glance at a figure which sat, cross-legged, at the peak of a column. The man positioned on the column would turn his head rather crookedly to the side and then down - he wore a black and purple middle-classed casual, elven outfit, face covered completely by a jagged violet mask, covered in a thick layer of dust.
"Rainak. Good of you to show up, brother," the man shouted as he leaped down from the top of the column, the dust flying off him in every direction as he did so.
"Yes... sorry I'm late," the man now identified as Rainak replied, with a sigh.
"Late?! How long has it been, brother?"
"... Three years."
"Three years?... it's been too long. Too long, brother," he spat back, raising a hand to tug a maggot from underneath his mask and flicking it away.
"Indeed, it has," Rainak peered around, eyes falling on the pile of dust which has fell. "That's... a lot of dust. How long have you been sat there?"
His eyes fell on Rainak from beneath his mask, cold, blank, "It must've been just under three years."
"You haven't explored? Tried to find an exit?"
"An exit? Pah... there's nothing here but caves, brother, you should know this."
"No... there's an exit behind me, a five minute wa-..."
"But is there? Is there really, brother?"
"I..." and it dawned on him, just then, that he had forgotten exactly how he got here, and didn't in the slightest find it at all odd. "I don't know."
"Exactly. These people are smart... the... elderly. A civilization before our own."
"Our? I'm not one of you, Vaunce, you know thi-..."
"You're as much a part of me as I am of you. Brother," the man identified as Vaunce interrupted hastily with a wriggled line stretching slightly underneath the mask. He reached underneath the mask once more, picking a maggot out and flicking it.
"I don-..."
"You will."
"Whatever... since we're down here, why don't we take a look around?"
"Yes."
Rainak scanned around once more, peering for a short while at Vaunce before he span in his heel at a ninety-degree angle, setting off at a slow pace, down into the ruins more - Vaunce following behind, flicking maggots off his person.
"Why didn't you come for me when I sent for you? I was trapped."
"Business. Civilizations were on the verge of death."
"What's more important, brother?"
"Them."
"... If you say so."
They came into a small cavernous room, laying in a small ditch in the middle of the room was an exact miniature replica of the Vaunce's hometown. Rainak turned his head, 'brows raising up at him with a slight tilt of his head.
"Thought you said you hadn't explored."
"I haven't."
"Then who built this?"
"Me."
"But..."
Completely ignoring the confusing fact, Vaunce turned his head, looking around from beneath the mask, "Where are we going, brother?"
"Exploring."
"Okay."
Rainak turned, frowning slightly, "Wait, wait. "Brother". You keep referring to me as brother. You've never done that. You sound almost... religious. As if you've been brainwashed. Have you seen something down here?"
The line beneath his mask would crease and wriggle about again, raising a hand to flick out another maggot, "No. Shall we continue?"
"... Okay."
After another good few minutes of exploring and they came to a large door. Opening it they walked through a long corridor, turning to the right and downwards in a sloping corridor, another right turn, a hallway and a door.
Vaunce stepped toward this second door, the line wriggling and curling once more - which Rainak had now identified as a smirk.
"Do you understand yet, brother?"
"Understand what?... what're you on about?"
"Do you have regrets, brother?"
"Of course."
"Not enough."
He pushed the door open, revealing what seemed to be either a demi-god or an extremely weak lesser god - frozen solid in stone. The people must've worshiped him, Rainak thought to himself, eyes transfixed onto Vaunce as he moved closer to an alter which stood in front of the statue.
"Vaunce..."
"Do you have regrets, brother?"
"Yes!" He exclaimed loudly, growling out and walking to the altar, slamming both hands down.
"No. Not yet," Vaunce sighed out, raising his right hand which would glow a deep violet, a darker purple orb beginning to surround him. He would seem to be reacting with the alter, stone chipping off the statue as he slowly came to life.
"Vaunce!"
But it was too late, the statue was now alive, Vaunce had disappeared into the shadows that surrounded them. Rainak drew his daggers, growling out as his features would distort slightly, eyes slitting as he began to transform, ready to lock combat with what he now realised was what he didn't want - a weak lesser-god, but a god none-the-less.
"Caught like a fly,
In a web of your lies,
It's truth be told now,
Or it's meet your demise!
So how did it feel?
When you held the knife,
That you stuck right in my back,
A thousand times!
Your grandfather would probably roll in his grave,
If he knew of that person that you had became!
I will not just lay down and take this!
Not again, not again.
You have left my heart, black and blue,
Just like your father did to you!..."
The voice came from the nothingness, Rainak taking the god on with ease as he let himself out, the fight now more between himself and... himself.
Kill him! He betrayed us! Friend or not, traitors meet a blade!
He didn't betray us! He's... misunderstood. Trapped here for three years, it does stuff to you.
An even better reason! You'd be doing him a favour! He must've gone mental down here! Put him out of his misery!
NO!
There's more. Those who've betrayed you before, are they still alive? NO! This pathetic mortal is no different, you woman!
Shut up!
Oh boo-hoo, he's gonna die either way. Everyone does, you know this. Sniff, sniff. JUST GET IT OVER WITH!
SHUT! UP!
KILL!
"...How does it feel, knowing your buried alive,
See through bloodshot eyes, you're left empty inside,
There I was, strung out and drug through the mud,
I must agree, you're just like me.
And when you die,
I won't be at your wake
No eulogy from me,
Just a smile on my face
And while They might be busy,
With judging your soul
I will have slept with the girl,
That you loved most!
You have left my heart, black and blue
Just like your father did to you!
How does it feel, knowing your buried alive
See through bloodshot eyes, you're left empty inside
There I was, strung out and drug through the mud
I must agree, you're just like me."
The god now lay dead at the feet of the new, slightly-deformed Rainak, silver blood dripping off his blades and from his newly-grown fangs.
"Come on, Vaunce! You mean to kill me! Then do it! I'd love to see you try, bitch!"
Vaunce would reappear now, a few yards from Rainak, eyes staring at him - again, cold, blank. "Do you still not understand, brother?"
"Understand," Rainak would begin to revert back to his former, mortal shell, features distorting once more as he would transform, "What?"
"Let me help you," His hands would reach up for his mask, slowly pulling it off. Rainak would reel back a few inches as his face was shown. His... face. No. Just maggots, maggots curled, stuck together in the same shape as Vaunces head. So he is dead. Yes. You killed him. Do you not see?
"Do you still not see, brother?"
"You're dead?"
See what?
"Yes, brother, but there's more than that."
"... What?"
You'll find out.
"I am you." The maggots would drop away, his clothing, his whole body. And behind the maggots would be an exact doppelganger of Rainak, same attire at the current time, daggers drawn.
"I... ah... what?"
'Rainak' smiled slightly, as the world around them both would disappear, revealing just black nothingness. Behind the real Rainak would be a bright white light. 'Rainak' stepped forward, directly through Rainak and the light.
"I... I don't understand," He would stand, staring blankly forward at the spot that his clone was standing, the inner devil cackling away madly inside his head.
Do you still not see, brother?
See what?
I'm dead. I'm a maggot. You're dead inside... thus, you are a maggot. You left me in the ground. You left me to die. You left me. You killed me.
You killed him! Hah! Good job!
Shut... up...
--------------------------------------------------
Rainak shoots awake, his chest knocking the sleeping woman awake with a loud groan, raising a hand to rub at her head.
"Ooooi. I was sleeping."
He looks down, arms grabbing at her sides and pulling her up into his lap, hugging his arms tightly around her figure, sighing.
"Ouch... what's up?" She raises an eyebrow, looking up at him and hugging him back.
"No matter what happens in the future, I'll always care for you."
I left him behind. Too many behind. He's dead. They're dead... he's right... I am a maggot.
Hah! Pathetic!
