Two hours of light pursuit, four hours of stalking, and finally I'm in position to make the kill. This bear has eluded me for a while, and is worthy of my respect. He shall make a fine kill, and will feed my family for days.
I sit on a thick branch of the tree I am hiding in, as he hunts his own food, the rabbits that dwell in the area. I can't help but sit here and admire the creature, his grace, his cunning, and his strength.
But I have a kill to make, so that my family may feast tonight. One arrow to the head and its all over. The kill is made. I say a short prayer to the gods, thanking them for granting me this kill, and ensuring our survival for another day.
The fur shall be blankets, the meat a feast, and the bones shall make useful tools for myself and family. I skin the creature, placing what I can carry into my packs. What I cannot carry will feed the wildlife here, and ensure their own survival. Balance in check.
"Seeker."
I turn around. Some woman standing there. Long dress, odd upper clothing setup and... a mask. Dammit. I assume a defensive stance. Arrow already loaded in my bow.
"Stay back Mesmer. I know not to trust your kind."
Despite the mask, her mouth is exposed. She cracks a grin. Looks at my kill.
"You are a fine huntsman, yet you choose poorly when it comes to friends."
Smug bitch. She doesn't know me at all.
"I go where the paycheck takes me. And I have seen enough lately to know that your kind can never be trusted."
She laughs. Always with the laughing with these types. Then she uses her damn Mesmer power to make some copies. So foolish. She doesn't know me at all.
"Such a shame to bring an end to a handsome one such as yourself. But we were told to pick off the weak ones first. Goodbye, seeker."
Then the magic casting comes from all directions. I had to act quickly, Firing an arrow, though it hit a copy, and dodging what I could while hurling my pack at what I couldn't. My kill is vaporized. Dammit, now I'll have to go and buy food from the city when I'm done.
The bitch doesn't know me at all. Time to let her know who I am. I can see Mesmers for what they are. I spot the real version of her standing in the middle, and let loose an arrow at her arm. I'm not like her. I don't seek to kill unless I have to.
Direct hit. She screams as the arrow pins her to a tree, her copies vanishing as she stops focusing on them. I walk over to her. Not smug, not happy, not victorious. Sad.
Sad that I have had to cause unnecessary harm.
Not stupid though, my arrow is already notched in case she tries anything. Her mouth is biting its lip, clearly in pain. Saddens me more, but its better than dying.
"Go back to your masters. And tell them that if they come near me again, I will have no choice but to target the next Mesmer that tries with lethal force."
I yank the arrow out of her arm. She cries out and falls to her knees. I frown again, a tug of guilt in my gut. But I shake it off. I did what I had to do.
She lets out a strained laugh, clearly still in pain.
"...There are other ways to get to you, seeker. like that lovely wife and child of yours."
She did NOT just threaten my family. She did NOT. The anger boils. I punch her in the face, her mask shattering in my hands, some of the shards cutting my fingers. Her face is slightly shredded too, her cheeks and chin with some small nicks.
I regain my composure. I realize that I just lost my temper. That tug of guilt hits me again. I look upon her broken face, now full of fear, and hate.
"Come near my family and I won't be held responsible for what I do."
I put my bow on my back, picking up what is left of my kill today. I don't turn back. I walk away, leaving the broken Mesmer there. She is undone for now. There is no need to kill. That tug of guilt follows me all the way home.
