It starts snowing as I get home. Fitting given the situation I guess. I push the door open to find my wife smiling at me with a hot mug of Tea.
"Hello dear. How was work?"
I sigh. After all, I'm about to run their day. Maybe even the week. Still, I'd rather they be safe.
"Lysandra, where is Beralla?"
She gives me a confused look. Well of course, its an odd question to ask as soon as I get home.
"Out playing in the garden... why do you ask Makael? You know I don't like it when you give me that look."
Heh. That look. The same look I gave her the day her mother died. I guess its natural for her to be concerned. Still, no time to lose. I have to get them safely to the city.
"There's some issues that have arisen with the guild work my love. I need you and Beralla to pack a few things, as we'll be moving to the city for a little while."
She looks scared now. I pat her on the shoulder. Keep her reassured. I don't want them tangled up in this. I just want them safe. She leans on me, so I give her a hug. I'm sorry Lysandra, I didn't want you caught up in all this...
"What have you been doing Makael? Why, the moment you join a guild, do you suddenly find yourself in trouble?"
I shake my head. None of this was in my plan. But destiny rarely calls upon us at a time of our choosing. Still, I can't tell her the truth. It could only place her in more danger. I don't want that. She sighs, looking to the door.
"I'll go and get Beralla... you go and fetch my pack. We'll nee-"
We hear a scream. I grab my bow and quiver. My wife panics.
"BERALLA!"
I kick the door open, running outside with an arrow ready to fire. I come face to face with the last person I wanted to see...
"Aaaah Makael. I thought I'd just look in on the wife and kids."
That fucking Mesmer from before. The one that I shattered the mask of. But she looks... different. Her mask is bright orange, her eyes seem brighter... like fire. She has Beralla! That bitch!
"Let her go! Its me you want!"
She laughs. It doesn't sound human. I don't think she's the same Mesmer I met before anymore.
"Didn't I promise that I would pay your family a visit for defying me? Well then, it is your fault I am here Makael. And now they will pay the price."
She has a dagger in her hand. She's going to kill my daughter to get to me... that bitch. That fucking bitch. And to think I once spared her.
My daughter is crying her eyes out. My wife is screaming. I feel a mixture of panic and rage. My heart is pounding. I won't let her down. One chance. I let loose my arrow without hesitation. It hits the Mesmer square between the eyes. I don't think she expected it. She falls down with a look of surprise in her eyes. My daughter, now free of the bitches grasp, runs into her mothers arms, being scooped up. They both cower behind me.
"Its okay now... its okay. She's dead."
I feel a little ashamed, having taken another life. But its not as hard as it was the first time. I guess people get used to killing after all. But turns out its not over. She sits up. I don't know how, but she's survived. She is smiling at me.
"Did I tell you about my new masters, Makael?"
Her body bursts into flame. The arrow in her head melts... She's one of them now. Dammit. She's standing now. Walking towards us. My family scream again, huddling behind me. I prepare another arrow, ready to meet my end.
"Just run... run! I'll buy you as much time as I can."
She laughs again. The flame seems to intensify.
"Don't you get it fool? I came to claim your family. Not you. And I intend to keep to my word."
I...can't move. My legs feel like they're rooted to the ground. My arms are like stone... Oh gods... she's going to kill them, and there's nothing I can do to stop it...
She laughs again. Getting closer. My family are frozen in fear.
All is lost...
A portal opens. A weird, purple one, I don't understand... What is this? There is a man... walking out of the portal... he looks like... me? Only... he has a huge sword... and a claw on his armour. And the anger in his eyes... eyes almost like my own.
"HOW DARE YOU! I CAST YOU OUT!"[/b]
He swings that massive sword of his... there is a flash of light... she's flying over the treetops... how can someone be so strong?
"I'm sorry. I can't kill her. That is not my destiny. But neither is it yours."[/b]
He turns to my wife and daughter, who are still huddled together, crying.
"But I couldn't stand by and watch them turn you into me. You don't deserve that."
I fall to my knees, hugging my family tightly. Oh gods... I'm crying so much. Not everyday you get saved by yourself. I kinda figure who the guy is, but its still hard to wrap my head around.
"...Thank you. I don't know what to say..."
He gives me a smile. His eyes look so old...
"Its nothing. Just keep them safe. Head to the city. I will ensure your trip is uneventful, and then return home."[/b]
He doesn't have to tell me twice. My family take a few moments to pull themselves together, then we pack whatever supplies we can carry and make for the city. My... other self keeps his word, shadowing us all the way to the city. It proves to be a thankfully uneventful trip.
He's gone before I can even thank him for the escort. I figure he has bigger fish to fry. But something he said still struck with me. It was not my destiny to kill her. So who's destiny was it?
It doesn't matter I suppose. My family is safe, and I am thankful for that. But I will likely have nightmares about it for many weeks to come.
