The small scout ship drifted at the edge of Ellrow's atmosphere, cloaked and out of range of the planets scanners. The ship's technology on the other hand, was more than capable of gathering data on the planet.
In the cockpit, Mordenn sat staring at the computer screen before him. In the chair beside him sat a small, pale man whose gaze was directed out the shuttle's window and at the planet below. He had the look of someone malnourished and was twitching with nerves. After several minutes, the Wolven sighed and turned to face the man.
"Bill, if I can smell your fear, then the strigoi will too the second we land."
Bill shook his head, refusing to meet the older man's gaze.
"It won't matter. You don't understand what it's like down there, everyone's always scared. Do you know three of my family have been killed so far? I think my son might even have been taken up!" His voice was quiet, the voice of a man who had spent his entire life trying to avoid notice, but the quiver of emotion was unmistakeable.
The planet below was occupied by a mix of mortals and strigoi. It was at the edge of the galaxy, not listed on any star chart and largely hidden by an asteroid field, which is probably what allowed events to transpire as they did. For several generations now, the planet had apparently been under the control of a totalitarian regime made up entirely of strigoi, originating from a trio of half-devils who had come to the planet seeking blood. Over the years, they had turned enough residents to take control, even creating a secret police to help control their food source. Ellrow had effectively become a blood farm, the terrified residents being herded like cattle. It was sheer luck that the man now sitting next to Mordenn had escaped, for without the help of Dragos the planet was likely doomed to continue as it was.
Mordenn had volunteered for the mission and arrived at the planet first to scout it. Situations like this were exactly what he had joined Dragos to stop. Fortunately for him, he had with him a device that would create an illusion around him and disguise the wolf-man as a human, allowing him to join the mission without arousing suspicion.
Turning his attention to the ships controls, he sent of the information on the planet the scanners had gathered as well as coordinates to the designated landing site back to the Midnight Realm. It was only a matter of time before more Inquisitors arrived to help carry out the mission.
He turned and gave Bill a half smile.
"Time to go home then?"
