War had been a common factor in the lives of immortals for a long time now, all the while the children of immortals were rendered orphans due to the untimely deaths of their parents, whether it be from service in the Hell Legion, or perhaps Dragos Midnight. Even in a time of relative peace in comparison to only a few millennia ago, the Xion Orphanage was always full of the poor children who would grow up never knowing the love of their parents, they would likely be drafted into some position when they came of age and forgotten about.
The kindly immortals who ran the orphanage had never expected their apparently meagre hospice to attract higher up attention, they certainly hadn't expected the Goddess of Life to begin attending the orphanage on a weekly basis and to begin bringing along friends of hers to care for the poor souls. Today was the day she was scheduled to attend and surely enough, at exactly thirty minutes past one in the afternoon Silya appeared in her simple white dress, strapped at the shoulders with golden broaches in the fashion of two leaves.
The children ran to her and hugged her legs, her kind smiling face gazing down at them, gently ruffling their hair and giving them hugs before ushering them all into the large room where they normally played games. She sat down in a chair and lifted the youngest onto her lap, the little girl was holding a teddy in her arms, clinging to it for dear life while she smiled brightly at being picked up.
"Hello all of you," she said, her voice soft and filled with warmth. "Have you all been behaving?"
They all chimed back, "Yes."
Silya giggled at their response, looking at their smiling faces happily, giving the little one in her lap a little kiss on the forehead.
"Are you going to sing for us?" she asked, her eyes shining hopefully.
Silya always sang something for them when she came. They all beamed at the mention of a song and Silya just giggled again, nodding and then carefully letting the little girl down.
"Well, what do you want me to sing?"
All of the children looked indecisive, when they did ask for something they seemed unable to agree, Silya finally raised her hands laughing merrily.
"I'll sing you one of my favourites," she said, then stood up and walked around to stand in front of the window, where the shining light from around Xion was illuminating the room. "I used to sing this all the time when I was little, me and my brother loved it."
The children all crossed their legs and sat quietly, looking at her in awe and excitement, it was rare for children to be so behaved but with Silya they always were. She cleared her throat gently before beginning.
"I wandered alone to the forest one night, led by a music strange to hear. And followed the glow of a shimmering light, that seemed to grow distant as I grew near."
"The woods were alive with the fragrance of spring, but winter was everywhere clear to see. The moon shone bright and a bird on the wing, beckoned me closer and said to me;"
She turned her voice into a sung whisper, leaning down with her hand around her mouth as though telling the children a secret.
"'A clearing close in the forest you'll find a fabulous banquet, a faerie ball. If you close your eyes and you open your mind, the veil disappears and you'll see it all.'"
She leaned back again and danced a little bit as she sung, a traditional dance that you would expect to accompany such a song about faeries, a myriad of ballet and tradition.
"Come and play as the wild faeries play in a magical circle, a faerie ring. You won't want to leave and forever you'll stay, where the vision is bright as spring."
"Come and dance the wild faerie dance, spin in a circle as fast as light. Once you begin you are caught in a trance, and the world can grow old in a single night."
"When I closed my eyes to the shimmering light, all memory faded and I could see, that a mushroom circle of red and white and myriad faeries surrounded me."
"Beyond all space and beyond all time, on gossamer wings did the faeries fly. With a joy unknown to a music sublime the faeries danced, and there danced I."
"Come and play as the wild fairies play in a magical circle, a faerie ring. You won't want to leave and forever you'll stay, where the vision is bright as spring."
"Come and dance the wild faerie dance, spin in a circle as fast as light. Once you begin you are caught in a trance, and the world can grow old in a single night."
She stopped there, and all the children clapped. There was more to the song really, but the last two verses were perhaps a little scary for children compared to the relative mystical nature of the part she had sung. She had also exchanged the bat with a bird, because bats were scary and traditionally claimed to suck blood, though very few bats truly did that.
"I'm glad you liked it," she said, kneeling down among the children and sitting the youngest in her lap again. "Next time I'll sing you another song, or maybe one more later before I go."
